Leeds United’s Charlie Cresswell is set to discuss his future with Jesse Marsch in the coming weeks

Leeds United youngster Charlie Cresswell has said he won’t be “sitting around waiting” as he has his sights set on first-team football next season.

The 19-year-old made five appearances for the Whites in the Premier League this season after coming through the ranks at Elland Road.

However, the defender revealed he is set for talks with Jesse Marsch and Victor Orta in the coming weeks to discuss his future.

As quoted by the Yorkshire Post on Tuesday [31 May], Cresswell said: “That’s for me to discuss with Jesse and Victor (Orta) over the next few weeks and see where that takes me.

“But ultimately, I would like to play more football, whether that be a loan or that be at Leeds.”

He added: “We don’t want to be sitting around waiting to play, we want to be playing, whether that be lower leagues or the team we’re at.”

Good attitude

Cresswell’s attitude towards his future is one that should be replicated by more Premier League youngsters in the future.

Too often Premier League talent is nurtured for too long in under-23 systems and not exposed to the physicality and reality of first team football earlier enough.

Younger players like Cresswell are far better off exploring their options in lower leagues and accept that they will develop the most when they’re exposed to the professional game.

With Leeds’ early intentions in the transfer window and the players rumoured to be of interest to Marsch and Orta, it is unlikely that Cresswell will be given many first team chances from the outset.

The youngster featured this season as a result of injuries, poor form and Leeds being embroiled in a relegation battle.

The hierarchy at Elland Road will be hoping that scenario doesn’t repeat itself again in their next Premier League campaign.

Cresswell should be actively looking for a move away from Elland Road, preferably to the Championship or League One to get some games under his belt.
