Leeds vote in favour of Premier League change – Sky Sports

Leeds United have voted in favour of introducing a temporary freeze to prevent Newcastle from signing new commercial deals linked to their new owners.

Sky Sports have shared the major update after the Magpies were taken over by the controversial Saudi-based consortium PiF Capital this month.

The Whites, along with 17 other clubs voted to introduce the rule to stop the new owners from signing deals to help sooth the Financial Fair Play rules.

An emergency meeting was called in London last week, which Andrea Radrizzani attended after the takeover was announced.

Concerns had been raised that the new Saudi owners of Newcastle could sign lucrative deals with Saudi-based companies.

That has now been temporarily frozen for one month, ahead of a potential permanent rule change around the corner.

Lucrative commercial deals would increase revenue and allow clubs to get around rules and spend more than they are actually allowed.

Frozen.

This appears smart and will prevent any bending of the rules with these huge commercial deals that will be thrown at Newcastle.

It is interesting that the Magpies were the only club to vote against the change, with Manchester City abstaining – how ironic.

We could have seen things such as naming rights for the stadium being flogged for huge amounts of money – something that Magpies fans would be desperate for after years of Mike Ashley and Sports Direct.

Leeds know that Newcastle are one of those mid-table clubs who will be looking to rival the Whites in those areas and push them closer to relegation.

Handing them the advantage of spending more than they can, which is already huge, would have been stupid.

Hopefully, the permanent rule can be sorted out sooner rather than later and there can be clarity between all 20 Premier League clubs.
