Leeds United legend John Giles shares Whites relegation verdict amid ‘total disaster’ defensively

Leeds United legend John Giles is worried for the club’s Premier League future amid a “total disaster” defensively.

The Whites have conceded 11 goals in their last two matches, losing 5-1 to Crystal Palace and 6-1 to Liverpool.

The heavy defeats mean the club now have the worst defensive record in this season’s Premier League with 60 goals conceded.

When asked by Off The Ball host Nathan Murphy if he is starting to get worried about the club’s Premier League status, Giles replied: “Yeah, totally, totally. Two matches at home, conceding 11 goals, scoring two, it’s bad.

“I didn’t think this would happen. I thought, okay they won’t win everything, but they will have enough to do it. But that hasn’t happened in the last two weeks in a big way.

“It’s not as if you are getting beaten 1-0 or 2-1 or you were unlucky, that hasn’t been the case. Just defensively, a total disaster.”

Disaster at the back

Leeds fans were in mixed spirits going into the campaign after narrowly avoiding relegation from the Premier League last season, where they stayed up by just three points.

Some of the fanbase were perhaps ready for their team to have a successful season this time around amid some exciting transfers, while others were predicting the club to once again struggle in the bottom half of the table.

It is indeed the latter scenario, with the Whites just two points from safety having picked up just seven league wins all season.

The West Yorkshire outfit have eight draws and 16 losses to their name, with the defeats coming largely thanks to a very poor defence that have shipped goal after goal throughout the campaign.

But the defensive issues have reached an all-time high in the last two games, with the Eagles and the Reds taking advantage of the lack of confidence to devastating effect.

In other Leeds United news, Barcelona could be set for an unexpected windfall from the Whites if they decide to sell Junior Firpo this summer.
