Leeds United hope Junior Firpo will return to training in two weeks

Leeds United hope that Junior Firpo will return to first-team action within the next two weeks, according to Phil Hay of The Athletic.

The 25-year-old left-back has made six Premier League appearances this season since joining the club in the summer from Barcelona for a reported fee of £13m (BBC Sport).

He has been currently out injured and hasn’t featured in the last Premier League game against Southampton. However, he could return shortly, within the next two weeks.

Marcelo Bielsa confirmed after the game that Firpo had sustained a muscle injury and hence didn’t feature.

Leeds are missing a host of key players at the moment. The Whites were without Patrick Bamford, Robin Koch and Luke Ayling against the Saints, while the likes of Kalvin Phillips and Raphinha were not used.

Problems

Leeds have struggled badly this season with Bielsa’s side failing to hit the consistency and form they showed last season. The Whites find themselves at 17th in the table, with one win in eight games thus far.

The shallow squad depth has come into question once again. While Leeds did a remarkable job with a compact squad for the past three seasons under Bielsa, it seems they are struggling this time around.

For Leeds, the success has been built on good understanding among the players who have a strong grasp of Bielsa’s methods. They have a unified dressing room and it has worked for them.

This term, the Argentine has faced problems with enforced rotations, and he hasn’t been able to name an unchanged line-up at a stretch at all compared to what he did in the past seasons.

Without Phillips, the Whites continue to struggle in midfield, while some of the first-team players have been below par. The likes of Tyler Roberts and Rodrigo have failed to make an impact when being called on.

Leeds will face Wolves in their next Premier League game at Elland Road on Saturday, and they must bounce back to winning ways.

In other Leeds United news, the Whites want to re-sign this former midfielder in January.
