Leeds United fan angered Victor Orta v Brentford with what he said about January transfers – Phil Hay
Victor Orta’s angry outburst was due to a Leeds United fan essentially telling him that business must be done in the January transfer window, according to The Athletic journalist Phil Hay.
Leeds’ director of football was caught by Sky Sports’ cameras going ballistic at the end of the 2-2 draw with Brentford last week and many are unsure about what triggered the Spaniard’s anger.
Hay says that he’s been told Orta’s rage was caused by a home fan in the West Stand who was making remarks about the upcoming January transfer window.
“When you look at it, it was an overly aggressive reaction and somebody in the crowd had been having a pop at him,” he said on the latest episode of The Phil Hay Show podcast.
When asked if it was definitely a Leeds fan, Hay replied: “Yes, it was. From what I was told, anyway, but I’m sure that’s right.
“[Orta] had a go back and I’m not one of these people who thinks the director of football should be seen and not heard. I think they’re entitled to have their say and it’s more difficult for someone like Orta to have his say.”
Hay was then asked if he knew what was said to Orta ahead of his angry reaction and The Athletic’s journalist added: “From what I was told, it was something to do with transfers.
“People who were there overheard what was said and it was something to do with, ‘you’re going to have to sort this out in January’. Something like that.”

Over-the-top?
When you read what Hay has said about Orta’s outburst, you cannot say that his reaction was justified.
However, we do not know the full story and only the jist of what was said to the Spaniard.
We cannot rule out there being any kind of abuse hurled at Orta, nor do we know the manner in which the Leeds United fan brought up the January transfer window to Orta.
But the concerns of the fan are legitimate and the January transfer window is absolutely massive.
Leeds’ squad has been decimated by injuries this season and the Brentford game was a really good one to raise concerns over the squad size with Kalvin Phillips, Liam Cooper and Patrick Bamford all getting injured.
January transfer windows have been a bit of a non-starter under Marcelo Bielsa’s charge at Leeds because he isn’t keen on signing new outfield players to join up with his senior squad when they have no pre-season to prepare in.
That’s fair enough. But injuries make it so clear that we need players in through the door as soon as possible.
In other Leeds United news, this Under-23s ace could be the new Patrick Bamford at Elland Road.
