MOT View: Leading sports lawyer update on EFL clubs could spell bad news for Leeds
A leading sports lawyer James Severn has claimed that a number of EFL clubs could consider a claim in damages if they miss out on promotion, including teams below Leeds United.
Severn was opening up on League One clubs after it was revealed that the third and fourth-tiers could be abandoned as early as this week.
It was suggested that if clubs miss out on promotion, they could consider making a claim or also seek an injunction to prevent the league from promoting or relegating teams.
Severn commented on any possible scenario should the season be cancelled, and that could have an effect on the Championship.
“League One is really interesting with only three points between second and eighth,” he said, as quoted by the Nottingham Post.
“Any club missing out in such a scenario may consider a claim in damages or seek an injunction prohibiting the League from taking a decision to promote or relegate clubs.”
Severn’s update on the possibility of legal action could potentially spell bad news for Leeds this season and their bid for promotion to the Premier League.
It is looking more and more likely that the season will be cancelled in the Championship, and with EFL chairman Rick Parry confirming that relegation and promotion is still on the table.
The next thing on the table is how they would decide to finish the campaign, with the Times revealing that a growing number of clubs want it to be decided on a point-per-game method – one that would see the Whites finish as champions.
