Journalist shares Leeds United promotion verdict as ‘impressive’ Daniel Farke stat emerges

Daniel Farke will surpass Marcelo Bielsa’s records at Leeds United and secure a return to the Premier League if they continue on their current trajectory, according to Matty Hewitt.

Writing on the LeedsLive website on Monday (25 September), the journalist said promotion now seems “more likely than first thought” under the German on the back of the recent results.

He pointed to the Whites’ “impressive” defensive record as a key reason behind their success, having conceded just 0.90 goals per game so far under Farke after letting in 1.29 goals under Bielsa [LUFC Data].

“The Whites average 1.60 goals-per-game under the German, but their goals conceded is equally impressive,” said Hewitt. “In 10 games under Farke, they’ve conceded just nine goals, with an average of 0.90 goals-conceded-per-game.

“Those statistics place him higher than the legendary head coach Marcelo Bielsa whose side scored an average 1.51 goals-per-game and conceded an average of 1.29 goals-per-game.

“It may be early days, but if the Whites are able to continue on their current trajectory, they’ll surpass Bielsa’s records and a return to the top flight seems more likely than first thought at the start of the campaign.”

Promising

It was a slow start to the campaign for Leeds under Farke as they lacked a cutting edge in the final third and struggled to find the back of the net.

But that was probably largely down to the uncertainty surrounding the club and a number of the players, with several key figures from last season’s side moving on.

Matters have certainly improved on the field since the transfer window closed, though, and now the stats – as well as the results – prove that they are moving in the right direction.

It’s still very early days under Farke, but to be ahead of Bielsa on the two most important metrics is very promising and bodes well for the rest of the season.

The Whites are starting to look like a well-oiled machine at the moment in time and they will be keen to keep the momentum going as they continue their assault on the top half of the table.
