Gareth Southgate makes special Patrick Bamford speech after England debut

Gareth Southgate made a special speech on Monday morning to hand Leeds United forward Patrick Bamford his first England cap.

The Whites talisman started the 4-0 win in the World Cup qualifiers over Andorra but failed to get his name on the scoresheet.

Southgate hailed Bamford for his journey to the Three Lions, and cemented his spot in English history with his new “legacy” number and cap.

Speaking on Monday after the 4-0 win, as shared on the official England Twitter account, Southgate hailed Bamford.

“These are legacy caps now,” he said.

“Your unique number, your place in England history. Of course, you all have it in your shirt now, but it’s something that I’m sure for you, your family, and all the coaches that helped you along the way to get to this point.

“You’ll have lots of people that have played a part in that journey, who I’m sure yesterday were very proud. Pleased to be able to hand this to you, Patrick.”

Legacy.

Of course, Bamford couldn’t get through his performance without receiving unwarranted criticism from pundits.

The Leeds forward is used to balls over the top and quick build-up play, something England struggled with for the entire hour he was on the pitch.

Obviously, when Jack Grealish and others came on the game opened up, as Trent Alexander-Arnold struggled in midfield behind Bamford.

Hopefully, Bamford gets another opportunity against Poland this week off the bench and can silence all of his critics yet again.

Marcelo Bielsa will be delighted to get another one of his squad into this England squad, joining Kalvin Phillips in making history yet again.
