‘Don’t think they would be able to continue’ – Exclusive: Pundit delivers stark Leeds warning

We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United…

Paul Robinson has said that he doesn’t think Leeds would be able to continue without getting promoted or taking on new investment this summer.

The 18/19 accounts showed that Leeds lost £21m last season, with £96 of every £100 going on a wage bill that now totals close to £50m a year.

Robinson said the club had been structured for promotion and that there would have to be big changes at the club if that didn’t happen.

Talking exclusively to MOT Leeds News, Robinson said, “The club’s been financially structured to get in the Premier League. I think there will be an issue next year clearly if the club doesn’t et promoted.

“Unless there’s fresh investment I think the manager will go, the coaching staff will go, I suspect the team would be stripped and the budgets would have to be looked at. You can’t sustain those sorts of financial losses year in year out without getting into the Premier League.

“I suspect without investment or the Premier League there will be a lot of restructuring. If the Premier League doesn’t come around it will be interesting to see what faces Leeds – I don’t think they’d be able to continue without taking investment.”

It might not be as stark as saying it’s now or never for Leeds but a lot rides on getting promoted this season.

Robinson doesn’t deal in hyperbole and knows how much is at stake.

It’s why the club came out and said it was vital that this season was finished and it should be a reality check for the fans who don’t want the season to go ahead if they can’t be in the stadium to witness it.

Some things are bigger even than the fans.
