Darren Bent votes for Leeds United player he compares to Robin van Persie
Ex-Tottenham striker Darren Bent has voted for Leeds United defender Luke Ayling in a poll for the EFL goal of the season so far.
Ayling, 28, had Elland Road on its feet last month when he opened the scoring in the 2-0 win against Huddersfield with a superb volley.
Jack Harrison’s deep cross found the Leeds right-back rushing in at the back post before he volleyed the ball past the Huddersfield goalkeeper.
Bent has suggested that it was a no-brainer to vote for Ayling’s goal, comparing the right-back to former Manchester United star Robin van Persie when he scored a similar goal against Aston Villa several years ago.
“Got to be Luke Ayling,” said Bent on Twitter. “What a volley, very van Persie-like.”
Ayling responded to Bent’s tweet a couple of hours later via his personal Twitter account, saying: “The man knows his stuff.”
Ayling has to win the goal of the season award but Leeds have scored some very good goals this season that could also be included.
One that needs to be talked about a lot more is Tyler Roberts’ goal against Hull when he rounded off a brilliant passing move.
Once the season ends – if it ever does – then both of those goals need to be in consideration but we see Ayling’s stunning volley being the most popular choice.
In other Leeds United news, one Sky pundit doesn’t believe Kalvin Phillips should be in the Championship team of the season.
