RB Leipzig have joined Leeds United in making an offer for Dinamo Zagreb centre-back Joško Gvardiol, according to Croatian outlet Sportske Novosti.

The report claims that both offers are the same, at around £17.8m with add-ons.

It claims the up-front fee from RB Leipzig is just over £15m but added that there would be generous add-ons on top of that.

It also claimed that RB Leipzig would buy the player and loan him straight back to Zagreb, with the player favouring more time at the club.

However, the good news for Leeds fans is that the report claims the Whites are still winning the race for his signature.

Champions league football but Leeds still in front

RB Leipzig have one advantage over Leeds in the race for Gvardiol – they can offer Champions League football.

However, Leeds do seem close to landing Gvardiol, with the very well connected Fabrizio Romano claiming they were close to an agreement last night.

Journalist Nicolo Schira went even further and said that Gvardiol had agreed terms on a four-year deal with Leeds.

He claimed it would be a “done deal” soon, although it remains to be seen if the RB Leipzig offer will throw a last-minute spanner in the works.

The fact that Leeds are not only competing for, but leading the race for, a player against a Champions League club is a sign of how far the Whites have come under Marcelo Bielsa.

Hopefully, a deal is confirmed for the centre-back soon, leaving Leeds just on the hint for a number 10/attacker before the season starts.

Getting all their business done before the start of the campaign would be a huge boost for Bielsa.
