‘Bonkers’ – Andy Goldstein dismantles Leeds fan on talkSPORT after 19/20 comments

There are some Leeds United fans who would rather stay for another year in the Championship if they can’t be in the stadium when the club is promoted.

Football is currently suspended and the EFL is looking at ways the season can resume.

The most likely seems to be playing the remaining fixtures behind closed doors.

With a seven-point lead over Fulham in third, this would probably see Leeds get promoted finally after relegation in 2004.

Talking on the Sports Bar on talkSPORT on Wednesday night, one Leeds fan called Chris insisted that if it was down to a choice between playing behind closed doors or staying another season in the Championship, he would take the latter.

“It won’t mean a thing to me if I’m not there,” Chris said.

Andy Goldstein couldn’t believe and said it was the most “bonkers” call he’d ever taken.

“If you can’t be there you’d rather it didn’t happen? Is that what you’re saying? You’ve lost the plot,” Goldstein said.

“Next season, do you want to see Leeds against Man United or Leeds against Barnsley?

“The most bonkers call I’ve ever heard. As a Leeds fan, you’ve supported them all your life, the one thing you want is your club playing in the Premier League next season, by hook or by crook.”

Our position is clear. Leeds have done enough to win promotion already but we’d much prefer the rest of the season to play out – behind closed doors if necessary.

We can understand why some Leeds fans feel differently but it’s club above everything at all times.

If Leeds don’t get promoted this season it could be catastrophic. Leeds posted big 18/19 losses yesterday and the wage bill is almost £50m – way too big for the Championship.

Marcelo Bielsa would probably leave if Leeds are in the Championship again next season. So would Kalvin Phillips. The current squad and manager set-up, the best in years, would be decimated.

We’re sorry but if it means fans can’t be there for promotion, that’s the price we all have to pay.

Some things are too important.
