'Alarm bells ringing at Elland Road' after major news reported about Bielsa
The Sun has claimed that ‘alarm bells are ringing at Elland Road’ after Lionel Messi has urged Barcelona to make Marcelo Bielsa their next manager.
Messi has decided that he is the man to take over from Quique Setien at the Nou Camp and Bielsa has yet to sign a new contract at Leeds.
His current deal runs out next week and while it was said that Leeds were very relaxed about talking to him over a new contract, that’s changed now.
Setien has only been at Barcelona for six months but his relationship with Messi has put his position under threat.
The report claims no contact has been made between Barcelona and Bielsa yet.
Should we be worried by this?
Obviously, a club like Barcelona would be a huge draw for most managers. It’s one of the biggest clubs in the world and Bielsa has never managed an elite club side.
However, Bielsa isn’t a man drawn by money or power. He will only take a job that suits him and one that gives him the control he wants.
He’s never going to get that at Barcelona, where power lies in different places – including on the pitch with Lionel Messi.
If Bielsa has decided that he’s going to stay with Leeds United in the Premier League, we don’t think the lack of a contract is anything to worry about.
We’re as sure as we were last week that he will go on to sign a new deal and manage Leeds in the Premier League.
He just doesn’t seem like the man who would have his head turned by Barcelona – and that’s assuming this report is correct and not one dreamed up by fantasy headline writers.
Of course, we’ll be a lot happier when Bielsa signs a new contract but we’re not overly concerned by this.
