After what seems like an eternity away, the Leeds United players returned to training at Thorp Arch on Monday, and fans have made it clear just how excited they are.

This is step one on a long road back to getting Championship games playing again.

The EFL has given group training the green light but that’s still a big step away from full-contact training.

The other bit of good news that’s come out, however, is that the government has announced step two of its ‘elite sport returning to training guidance’, which deals with contact training. [Daily Mail]

Monday marked the first time that groups of Leeds player have been able to train together, though, and the sun was out to greet them.

They turned up in staggered groups and the official Leeds Twitter account heralded the big day with a shot of Kalvin Phillips and Tyler Roberts safely social distancing at the training ground.

The tweet read, “Back together again… at a social distance!”

When you’ve been deprived of football for as long as we have, anything that hints at a return to normalcy is brilliant.

This might be the start of a new normal but now that fans have got used to the idea that they won’t be watching the rest of the season in person, you would have been very hard-pressed to find any Leeds fan who saw Monday’s news as a negative.

Hull City fans and players might see it very differently.
