'Unbelievable', 'Utter nuts' – These Leeds fans react to Phil Hay Twitter message

Athletic journalist Phil Hay picked his number one goal for Leeds United over the Easter weekend, and it was Gordon Strachan’s strike against Leicester.

The goal secured the points in the penultimate game in the 1989/90 season that would see Leeds promoted back into the first division.

In the accompanying article, Hay said of the goal, “Only one word adequately describes it. Perfect.”

And plenty of Leeds fans agreed with him on Twitter.

The article also talked to commentator John Helm, who came up with the line, “Have you ever seen a better goal? And have you ever seen one better timed?” that made the goal so special.

Some Leeds fans talked about being at Elland Road for the game that ended 2-1, and one said it is “a game I’ll never forget”.

There were some dissenters. A couple of fans said that while it was a good goal it wasn’t on the same level as Tony Yeboah’s wonder strike.

However, while that was a moment of individual genius, this was so much more. The occasion, the timing of the goal, the commentary and the ‘what might have been’ if Strachan hadn’t scored it.

Oh, and the ultimate limbs.

For us, it’s a moment in time that was absolutely crucial to the history of Leeds.
