Leeds United smashed their transfer record for Valencia striker Rodrigo this summer, for an initial fee of £27m.

Rodrigo is the current Spain number nine and plenty of Leeds fans think they’ve got a bargain after an update on another big summer striker target, Brentford’s Ollie Watkins.

BBC journalist Phil McNulty has claimed that Watkins is “close to deal” with Aston Villa for an initial fee of £28m. That could rise to £33m with add-ons.

Leeds were linked strongly with Watkins over the summer, with Leeds Live journalist Beren Cross stating the Whites were “serious” about the Brentford attacker.

He said he would be amazed if Leeds didn’t bid for him, although at the time it was thought Watkins had an £18m relegation release clause.

That doesn’t seem to be the case and a fee that could rise to £33m is a huge amount of money for a player who’s never played above Championship level.

One Leeds fan said, “The English premium is ludicrous” and that sums up the general disbelief among Whites fans this afternoon.

One said, “And you wonder why our attention has switched to the European market”.

Leeds fans certainly think they came out on the right side of this deal, signing a full Spain international for less money than Watkins is going to cost their Premier League rivals.

Here are the best reactions from bemused supporters…

Even Aston Villa fans think it’s a lot of money, with one saying, “I really like Watkins, but this money is madness.”
