The transfer saga between Leeds United and RB Leipzig over Jean-Kevin Augustin took a fresh twist on Tuesday evening.

Phil Hay reported that the German club have reached out to FIFA over whether or not the Whites owe them compensation for the Frenchman.

The striker now plays for Nantes in Ligue 1, after both clubs gave permission for them to make a move for the newly-made free agent.

Leeds initially agreed to pay Leipzig £18million after last season’s loan move, but COVID-19 eventually put an end to that.

Andrea Radrizzani and the Whites claim that the clause ran out after the Championship season was extended past June and into July.

The Athletic claim that one of three things could happen.

Leeds could be demanded to pay the full fee, nothing or a percentage of the £18million that was initially agreed.

FIFA didn’t order clubs to pay off clauses or negotiate extensions in wake of the pandemic, so the Whites appear to have a strong case.

Nantes appear to be having similar problems with Augustin though, who can’t get fully fit. The 23-year-old has completed 43 minutes of action and Leeds won’t want to spend a single penny on this failed move.

Many Leeds fans have reacted to the latest twist, with the majority claiming that there is no chance the Whites will need to pay compensation.

Some even claimed that if Radrizzani does need to cough up the cash, does Augustin technically belong at Elland Road.
