‘It’s massive for Leeds’ – Exclusive: Pundit reacts as Whites handed huge PL promotion boost

We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United…

Paul Robinson has said the news the Championship is starting up again on June 20 is “massive for Leeds”.

With the Premier League announcing a June 17 return date last week, the EFL released a statement on Sunday night stating it would return on the weekend of June 20.

It means that both leagues should play out on the pitch, behind closed doors, and that three teams will be relegated from and promoted to the Premier League.

“It’s massive for Leeds,” Robinson said exclusively to MOT Leeds News. “Now that they’ve decided on a date to return there’s still a lot to decide between now and the date they’ve given.

“There are still a lot of decisions on venues, games and the like… But now they’ve got something to aim for – there’s a target for everyone to aim for.

“We’ve said from day one that anything the Premier League does the Championship has to mirror and they’ve done that now.

“The safety of the players and staff was always paramount but I’ve been surprised how few positives have come back and I’d imagine that will hit zero before too long.

“Leeds are in a very strong position now.”

The Leeds players have only been back in training since last week in the Championship and they’re still not contact training.

That should happen on Tuesday, which leaves less than three weeks before the games start again.

That’s not long and it’s left some clubs unhappy – like QPR – but Leeds will soon be back where they want to be, on the pitch at Elland Road.
