‘It’s massive’ – Exclusive: Pundit reacts to latest EFL update on finishing 19/20 Championship
We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United…
Paul Robinson has said that the latest EFL plan to finish the 19/20 season is “massive for football”.
EFL chairman Rick Parry sent out a letter to clubs that said the remaining games in the season could be played over a 56-day period.
That would include two-legged play-off semi-finals and the final. Training would start no earlier than May 16.
Talking exclusively to MOT Leeds News, Robinson said, “It’s massive, not just for Leeds but for football.
“To abandon a season like that – everything else has to be taken into account first and everything has to be a million and one per cent safe before we can even talk about that – but you talk about Leeds and their financial losses in the 18/19 season and how they would have to restructure next year without the Premier League or without investment.
“But it’s not just Leeds. It’s all the other teams that are involved in promotion and relegation too. And it’s the Premier League too.
“It would have such a big impact if the season was cancelled – no more so than on Merseyside.”
Dates seem to be falling into place with June 6 now being reported as the re-start date the EFL’s aiming for.
The Premier League is set for a meeting with all 20 members at the end of this week and we’re likely to get even more information then.
The Premier League and the Championship are inextricably linked and the EFL will likely follow any lead from the top flight.
