‘Absolutely no point’ – Exclusive: Paul Robinson reacts to Gary Neville plan for 19/20 Ch’ship

We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United…

Paul Robinson has said that there is “absolutely no point” putting people together if it’s not safe and said that if the rest of the 19/20 season had to be played behind closed doors “then so be it”.

Robinson was reacting to comments made by Gary Neville on Sky Sports, who said that playing the 19/20 season out without fans was “the only way I see it happening”.

All football in the UK is currently suspended indefinitely with no re-start date currently on the table.

Talking exclusively to MOT Leeds News, Robinson said, “It’s a decision to be made at a higher level than just among football clubs.

“People’s safety is paramount and until things are back to normal, there’s absolutely no point putting a load of people together just for a football match.

“If it’s the case that playing behind closed doors is the only way to do it, then so be it.”

However, Robinson pointed out that even playing behind closed doors would come with its own issues amid the Coronavirus outbreak.

Games would need access to medical infrastructure and facilities and Robinson added: “You don’t want to be putting any unnecessary strain on an already struggling NHS.”

FIFA are set to add their voice to the growing number of bodies that want to see the 19/20 season finished.

UEFA, the Premier League and the EFL have already spoken about their commitment to the domestic leagues getting finished.

Meanwhile, in Germany, Bundesliga clubs have started training again with small groups of players. It’s the first sign of things starting to get back to any form of normality in the game.
