Villa to give up on Phillips after Luiz deal?
Leeds fans will be a lot happier this morning after it was reported that Aston Villa are poised to seal a £15m deal for Man City midfielder Douglas Luiz.
The Telegraph reported the news and claimed the deal should be completed in the next few days.
Luiz is a defensive midfielder and it’s highly unlikely that Villa will look to spend a similar amount bringing Phillips in as competition for the same position.
Some Leeds fans were fearing the worst with Villa in pursuit of Phillips but it looks like the club’s stance – slapping a £30m price tag on Phillips – has served its purpose.
Phillips played for Leeds last night and was named as captain in the club’s 2-1 win over Guiseley, their second pre-season friendly.
Fans from both sides think the Phillips deal is off the table now, with one Villa fan calling it a “dead duck”.
If that does turn out to be the case then a deal that Leeds aren’t involved in could turn out to be one of the most crucial of the summer.
This is what Villa and Leeds fans made of the news:
Phillips deal now a dead duck. This Luiz kid looks a real talent and again can defend, is good with his feet and has decent passing ability

I’d say Phillips deal is dead then
