View: Leeds United show defensive nouse as Luke Ayling wins battle with Wilfried Zaha

Leeds United made it five matches without defeat last night as they earned a vital point at Crystal Palace.

Jesse Marsch’s side recorded their second consecutive clean sheet as they showed their organisation and structure to hold on for a point despite a below-par performance.

The point extends the gap between Leeds and 18th placed Everton in the Premier League table to five points, but The Toffees have a game in hand.

Danger averted

Luke Ayling put in a fantastic defensive performance and was one of the key reasons why Leeds took a point from Selhurst Park last night.

The right-back lined up against Crystal Palace forward Wilfried Zaha who occupied the left-wing, and many had predicted the Ivory Coast international to run rings around the Leeds defender like he’s done to many in the Premier League over the years.

However, Ayling was more than a match for Zaha as the two battled and tussled with each other for the full 90 minutes with the 30-year-old coming out on top.

The Leeds number two got it spot on from the first whistle against Zaha, as he got in the head of the Palace winger with several tackles, interceptions and even some amusing taunting.

The intention to wind up Zaha and throw the Eagles’ star man off his game was a plan that worked to perfection as Leeds came away with a clean sheet and vital point in their bid for Premier League survival.

Zaha looked like a frustrated man every time he was unable to beat the full-back, which had a detrimental impact on his performance and subsequently Crystal Palace who are a much weaker side when the winger is nullified.

In other Leeds United news, Jesse Marsch has been showered with praise by Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher.
