MOT View: Leeds could miss out as reported target may be rewarded with new deal after fine form

It has been made no secret that Leeds United could be looking to bring in another goalkeeper in the summer.

Illan Meslier has already made his switch to Elland Road permanent, but the future of Kiko Casilla is much-less clear after his racism ban.

The Spaniard featured in the 3-1 win at Derby at the end of last season, but we believe there should be no place for the experienced stopper in our Premier League squad.

Who could replace him? Two Argentines have sprung to the top of the reported shortlist at Elland Road.

Manchester United’s Sergio Romero and Arsenal’s Emiliano Martinez are two players who have impressed the Whites in their search.

The Athletic’s Phil Hay claimed that the South American duo are in a similar category and that Leeds certainly like Martinez.

Leeds could be set for disappointment though, with Martinez earning an extended role at Arsenal due to the injury of Bernd Leno.

The German was ruled out for the season and that has given Mikel Arteta the chance to utilise Martinez, who will now also start in this weekend’s FA Cup final against Chelsea.

This is the worst possible case scenario for Leeds. Before Leno’s injury, Martinez will have been growing frustrated at his chances at the Emirates, potentially opening the door to a switch to West Yorkshire.

ESPN has now reported that the 27-year-old could be rewarded for his fine form with a new contract in North London.

That would all but end Leeds’ chances of bringing in Martinez, and they could be forced to look elsewhere in the transfer window.

The same outlet did initially report the Whites’ interest in Romero too, although there appears to be stiff competition from Everton.

Either way, no one said it was going to be easy, with Leeds now shopping for different calibre of players after their promotion to the Premier League.
