View: Leeds United ace Patrick Bamford unluckiest man in world after fitness update

Patrick Bamford is the unluckiest man in the world after the horrendous season the Leeds United striker has had with fitness – or lack of – this season.

The England international has only played nine Premier League appearances this season with a mere seven of them being starts.

In those games, he has managed to find the net only twice which is shocking in comparison to his 17 in his previous campaign.

Every time he has neared a return from injury this season he has suffered a setback with him missing the last game of the season due to having COVID serving as proof.

Whilst you can look at the management of the player amid desperate times when the Elland Road outfit simply needed to add to their points tally – for example, the Wolves game at Molineux that he played when he clearly wasn’t ready – a lot of his issues need to be chalked down to rotten luck.

Refresh.

Bamford along with several other key players’ absences nearly cost the Leeds United their Premier League status this season.

The whole spine of their squad was ripped out with injuries to Liam Cooper, Kalvin Phillips and Stuart Dallas to name a few.

Marsch’s side struggled massively in their absence but the main thing is that they weathered the storm and are now safe – by the skin of their teeth.

In some ways, this season might be positive. The Whites’ first season in the Premier League gave them a false sense of security that their squad is at the necessary level for the English topflight – something we now know to be completely untrue.

This squad has looked a mess on several occasions during the course of the season and the Leeds chiefs desperately need to act over the summer.

Not only does it need to be bigger and more resolute but the overall quality of the players needs to be much higher because the drop off when key men have been absent has been embarrassingly bad.

Thank god they are still in the Premier League after this shambles of a season – that will go a long way in bringing players in ahead of next term.

In other Leeds United news, an Athletic journalist has shared a “bizarre” celebration from a key Leeds man after the Brentford win.
