The reason Jack Clarke was dropped from Leeds squad v Wigan
Jack Clarke must have been on cloud nine when he completed a permanent move to Tottenham over the summer for a fee close to £10m.
It was a meteoric rise to the top of English football after he made his breakthrough under Marcelo Bielsa for Leeds last season.
However, he was subsequently loaned back to Leeds and was brought back down to earth on Saturday when he was dropped from the matchday squad.
The reason a £10m winger can’t even get in the squad at Leeds is all down to the loans Leeds brought in over the summer.
EFL rules state that you can only have five in your matchday squad and Leeds have six on their books. One player has to give and against Wigan it was Clarke.
Helder Costa, Ben White, Jack Harrison and Eddie Nketiah are all ahead of him in the queue, and the other loanee is back-up goalkeeper Illan Meslier.
Clarke played 90 minutes for the Under-23s on Monday, while Costa and Nketiah put in 45-minute shifts, and that suggests that Clarke is going to be the fall guy again for the Championship game against Brentford.
It probably wasn’t what Clakre had in mind for this season and we doubt that Tottenham are best pleased at how things are working out either.
