The Leeds United, Marseille, Fofana, Kamara conundrum

Leeds United are still pursuing a new midfielder in this January transfer window and much of their search now centres around a conundrum at Marseille.

According to Calcio Mercato, the French side’s manager, Jorge Sampaoli, has expressed his admiration of RC Lens midfielder Seko Fofana, a player Leeds have been linked with [Daily Mail].

“He seems to me one of the best players in the league. He can play in any club: since I arrived in Marseille, he is the player who has impressed me every weekend,” Sampaoli said.

Should Marseille make a move for Fofana, scuppering Leeds’ attempts, then that could open the door for 22-year-old Boubacar Kamara to leave the club with his contract ending in the summer.

Marcelo Bielsa also has rumoured interest in Kamara, as per the Mail on Sunday (2 January, Page 141) so either outcome would be great for the Leeds United boss.

If Fofana isn’t pursued further by Marseille, that could leave Leeds as the only potential suitors, making negotiations that little bit easier as they wouldn’t have to compete with another side.

If the Ligue 1 side does sign Fofana, then Kamara could be allowed to leave and the Whites would be one of the favourites again in that scenario.

The weird feeling about this situation is that neither Leeds nor Marseille would necessarily be worse off regardless of which way it goes.

The only club who would be hampered is RC Lens as it looks like Fofana would leave one way or the other.

For Bielsa’s sake, the deals need to be done as soon as possible to deter any other clubs from joining the vortex.
