Leeds said they would be looking for players who could make an impact on loan from the Premier League this summer and, so far, they’ve been true to their word.
Jack Harrison, Ben White and Helder Costa have all joined on loan and we wouldn’t be surprised if that’s as many people as the club brings in this summer.
Only Ryan Kent has been mentioned by reputable source Phil Hay as another target and that link has gone quiet for now.
That hasn’t stopped the rumour mill grinding on Twitter and the latest player to be picked up and thrown about is former Arsenal striker Danny Welbeck.
Teamtalk ran a story on Thursday morning citing unspecified reports that Leeds are interested in bringing the 28-year-old to Elland Road, but it was news to Phil Hay, who responded by saying, “Must be fairly bad if people are banging on about Welbeck. Who made that one up? Buffon?”
And the rumours seem to have originated from Leeds podcast The Square Ball, who mischievously said on Wednesday night that they had heard Leeds were interested before admitting they made it up, plucking his name from a list of free agents.
That was enough for one leading bookmaker to make Leeds second-favourites to sign the striker.
Welbeck was on £70k/wk at Arsenal before his contract expired last week and will likely be looking for a new deal in the same ballpark. That’s not the same park that Leeds are playing in at the moment. You can file Welbeck in the same drawer as Gianluigi Buffon and Francesco Totti, two other players that Leeds were hilariously linked with earlier in the summer. With all the will in the world, it’s not going to happen.
Chance of signing for Leeds?
