Phillips was sensational again v Salford

Leeds strengthened the squad well this summer, bringing in Helder Costa and Eddie Nketiah, with Jack Harrison and Jack Clarke re-joining on loan.

In defence, Ben White looks like a brilliant addition already and is playing like he’s been at Elland Road as long as Marcelo Bielsa.

However, probably the best bit of business the club did was holding onto Kalvin Phillips.

The 23-year-old is at the centre of everything Leeds do under Bielsa and he proved it again with an absolutely tireless performance against Salford on Tuesday.

His heatmap shows how effective he is in the centre of the park and his stats from the Salford game were typically impressive.

According to Sofascore, he had 128 touches and made 99 accurate passes, including two key passes, two crosses and 23 long balls (15 of these were accurate).

He had three shots, two on target, and won back possession five times, once in the final third.

Phillips missed four Championship games last season and Leeds lost three of them. Like Fernandinho at Man City last season we just don’t have a replacement for him at the moment.

It would have been a disaster if he’d been sold and now it’s vital that the club ties him down to a new contract. He’s worth the money.
