Leeds United fans have taken to Twitter to react to Ben White’s questionable defensive outing against Chelsea on Saturday afternoon.

The ex-Elland Road loanee turned out for Brighton in a preseason friendly against the Blues, and instantly drew reactions from Whites supporters – with many suggesting that he already looks a shadow of the player we saw in Yorkshire last season.

The 22-year-old was caught out early on by a fairly routine ball over the top that allowed Frank Lampard’s men to take the lead in the fourth minute, and the gaff had many fans claiming that Seagulls boss Graham Potter has already “broken” the young talent.

On the basis of that mistake, it’s not hard to see why either.

Granted, it’s early in the game and there is bound to be some preseason rust that White needs to shake off, but his reading of the game is poor to say the very least.

If you were to form your opinion of the defender off his play in the build up to that goal and nothing else, you would struggle to believe that he is the same man who made 3.76 interceptions per 90 minutes last season, as per Wyscout.

One of the main things that fans seemed to take away from the incident, however, is that Brighton’s valuation of White may be a little excessive.

According to Football Insider, Leeds had a £30 million bid for the player knocked back by the Seagulls earlier this month, but many are now questioning whether he is genuinely worth anywhere near that amount.

For what it’s worth, it’s only fair to point out that one mistake doesn’t define a player – especially one who had such a barnstorming season at Elland Road last year.

But the concern will be that White only flourished in the manner that he did last term because he was working under Marcelo Bielsa.

One preseason error isn’t a huge deal, but if we continue to see this kind of thing from him, the player himself may start to wonder whether signing a new contract on the south coast – as he is reportedly on the cusp of doing – is really the best idea.
