According to data from Transfermarkt, the Leeds United squad has seen the biggest rise in valuation of any side in the top European leagues over the past year.
In an article by Casumo, the Leeds squad was valued at £79.43m on January 1, 2020.
After coming up to the Premier League with Marcelo Bielsa, it’s now worth a staggering £163.19m – a rise of 105.5% or £83.77m.
Kalvin Phillips is the player whose value has risen the most, with Transfermarkt currently valuing him at £19.8m.
Victor Orta might have loosened Andrea Radrizzani’s purse strings for the Premier League but before that he had steadily built up a squad of players on a relative shoestring.
Sure, there were some misfires along the way but some of the players that Orta has bought in have been real bargains, like Mateusz Klich (£1.5m), Gjanni Alioski (£2.2m) and Tyler Roberts (£2.5m).
Even before Orta turned up, Leeds were doing good business, signing Luke Ayling for less than £1m.
All of these players are worth many times what they were bought for and we think we’ve got Marcelo Bielsa to thank for their stars rising.
Bielsa has improved every single player he’s worked with at Leeds and some players, like Kalvin Phillips, have had a complete transformation.
He’s turned Phillips into an England regular.
And Leeds did some fantastic business over the summer, too, buying Illan Meslier for £5m and Joe Gelhardt for less than £1m.
In Bielsa, Leeds have one of the top five managers in the world (FIFA confirmed this today). In Orta, Leeds have a sporting director who is quickly becoming a force in world football.
