MOT View: Very real chance of 'dynamic' Leeds player leaving in January after Bielsa confession

Bielsa confessed that he feels “guilty” over Robbie Gotts not getting any minutes for Leeds yet.

20-year-old Gotts has yet to make his debut, despite being on the first-team bench 30 times for Leeds – 27 times in the Championship and play-offs.

Gotts has had to watch while other academy players like Oliver Casey, Pascal Struijk, Alfie McCalmont and Mateusz Bogusz have all come in and made their debuts before him.

Bielsa was talking in Thursday’s press conference (live in the LUFC app, 12.30pm) and confirmed that he had talked to Gotts about the situation.

Bielsa said, “I want him to stay at Leeds but if he wants to leave I will support him.

“There are a lot of players in the same situation. Alfie McCalmont and other players as well.”

It’s true that Leeds have a lot of very talented young players all vying for a spot in the team. And ultimately, we want don’t want Bielsa to pick a team with sentimentality – results have to come first.

However, McCalmont has played twice in the EFL Cup this season. Bogusz made his debut in the EFL Cup.

This could be what Bielsa was referring to when he said he felt guilty. The EFL Cup is the perfect opportunity to blood youngsters. It’s going to be very tough for Gotts to get a look-in in the Championship, bar a series of unlikely injuries.

Bielsa said he’s talked to Gotts and the way he was speaking today, it sounded like Gotts leaving is a very real possibility. And that he could go, albeit reluctantly, with Bielsa’s blessing.

That would be a big shame for a player who Bielsa has talked up in the past. He said of Gotts: “I have never seen a player play with such a dynamic. He’s a player with skills.”

Bielsa has claimed his best position is as a number eight, with Adam Forshaw, Mateusz Klich, Jamie Shackleton and Stuart Dallas ahead of him in the pecking order.

When Shackleton and Forshaw are fit again it’s going to be even harder for Gotts and he may well think a move away is in his best interests.
