MOT View: Under-performing Leeds ace surely handed lucky boost by Phillips suspension
The three-match ban picked up by Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips has given Marcelo Bielsa a big headache.
Leeds are in the middle of a real tricky period in the Championship that has seen their gap to the play-offs shrink to three points, although they have a game in hand.
The game against Millwall on Tuesday is a real chance for Leeds to get back on the horse and kickstart another good run of form past January.
Bielsa will have a number of choices to make, although the midfield conundrum has to be at the top of his list.
One player that could count himself lucky is Mateusz Klich. The Pole has been underperforming recently, and if Phillips was available, he would have been the first-name to drop out of the midfield.
Klich has not been good enough recently. The 29-year-old was dragged off early in the game against Sheffield Wednesday – only the third time this season he has failed to complete 70 minutes in a game.
The Polish international looked tired against QPR last time out, and could really benefit from being dropped. He has only been involved in three goals this season, much less compared to last season, and the success from that campaign could be dragging him down slightly.
If Klich can rediscover that form in the next month, he could be vital in the promotion run-in. He has completed less than 40 passes in the past two games, he only managed that once in the 11 clashes before that [WhoScored].
Should Phillips have not been suspended for the next three games, it probably would have been Klich to drop out if changes were made. In that instance, the European playmaker is certainly set to have a lucky boost at Elland Road.
