Kalvin Phillips hasn’t looked back since Marcelo Bielsa arrived at Leeds United.
He’s been transformed from a decent box-to-box midfielder into one of the country’s best defensive midfielders who is very likely to play in the Euros this summer.
He made his England debut before touching a ball in the Premier League and is the heartbeat of this Leeds side.
It might have been different. When Leeds narrowly missed out on promotion in Bielsa’s first season, Phillips came close to leaving for Aston Villa.
In the end, he decided to stay and give Leeds another spin of the dice and Phillips was rewarded with a new, improved contract and the chance to play in the top-flight with the club where he was born.
Phillips loves Leeds and Leeds fans absolutely adore Phillips.
Now, Leeds are aiming to ensure that he doesn’t come close to leaving again this summer with another new contract.
That’s the exciting news from the Daily Telegraph who claim that the new contract will bring him in line with the highest-paid players at the club.
Wages have been going up with signings in the Premier League and it’s only right that Phillips new deal reflects his position in the squad.
Patrick Bamford is also set for a new contract and that would tie up two of Leeds’ most important players.
They’re also the players who have improved the most under Bielsa and we’d like to think that they know their futures are best served under Bielsa and in White.
After a fantastic first season back in the top-flight, this is the sort of exciting news that we want to see kickstart another busy summer in the transfer window.
