Leeds United need a consistent striker if they are to thrive in the Premier League.
That’s no slight on Patrick Bamford, who has hit two goals in his last three games and who looks as if he is finally coming back into some decent form, but there have been long spells this season when even the most optimistic of fans would have to admit that we have been crying out for an out-and-out finisher.
With that in mind, it’s been pleasing to hear in recent days that the Whites are lining up an ambitious swoop for Celtic hitman Odsonne Edouard, as per the Mirror.
The Frenchman hit 27 goals and 19 assists in 45 outings for the Hoops this season, and a direct comparison between him and Bamford illustrates just how much of an improvement he could be.
For starters, his short accuracy is 9.3% higher than Bamford’s, and he makes 5.27 more dribbles per game, as per Wyscout.
Most telling, however, is the comparison between his xG and his goals per game.
Edouard has an xG of 0.71, but a goals per game of 0.85 – meaning that he scored 0.14 goals per game more than he is expected to.
By contrast, Bamford has an xG of 0.62, but a goals per game of just 0.35 – meaning that he is 0.27 goals per game that he should be scoring.
Quite simply, there is no doubting how lethal Edouard is.
Take his strike against FC Copenhagen back in February as an example.
In the image above, the 22-year-old is the Celtic player just entering the box.
Notice how he is just out of the defender’s eye-line, waiting for his opportunity to dart to either post.
As the ball comes across, the hitman then perfectly displays the intelligence of his movement.
Rather than getting sucked into the action, he just hangs back, allowing the defence’s focus to shift and dropping off into the space that naturally opens up at the far post.
By the time the ball reaches him, Edouard has not only given himself a yard or two’s advantage over the defender, but he then shows the skill and presence of mind to dink a wonderful effort over the onrushing keeper and into the far post.
It’s brilliant stuff, and is the perfect exhibition of the cunning and poise that make him such a lethal threat.
If we could land him this summer, it would be a major, major coup.
