MOT View: Stunning assist from reported Leeds target shows he is a serious talent

Leeds United are very much in the hunt for a new central defender this summer.

The latest name to be linked with the club is that of Lazio talent Luiz Felipe, with Italian outlet La Lazio Siamo Noi suggesting that a bid of around £26.8 million is being prepared by the Whites.

On paper, he looks like a decent option too.

Last season, for example, his pass completion rate was 3.4% higher than Ben White’s, while he also registered 1.85 more interceptions per game and had a higher total action success rate too, as per Wyscout.

It’s his passing in particular that makes him a real asset though.

In the image above, taken from Lazio’s 2-0 win over Brescia last month, we can see that Felipe completed 47 out of his 49 attempted passes at a rate of 96%.

What’s really noticeable, however, is the range of his passing.

It’s not just short interplay with his defensive partner, but long, searching diagonals designed to break the lines and get his team moving in the right direction.

If we compare Felipe’s graphic to the pass map taken from White’s last performance for Leeds we can see definite similarities – the tendency to look forward and the consistency of the distribution, for instance.

A quick look at an assist the Brazilian laid on against Genoa back in September really highlights his ability on the ball too.

Felipe assumes possession deep in his own half, and is already looking to stride forward.

But even with that positive outlook, he must have been surprised by the extent of his own creativity.

Getting his head down, he glides past three opponents with ease.

This is not the work of a centre-back, but rather a tricky winger, teasing and tempting with his quick feet before leaving his bemused defenders in the dust.

From that point onwards, Felipe still has a lot to do, but the quality of his final ball is absolutely superb.

The pass is perfectly weighted, and with a moment of magic he is able to cut out an entire defence and leave his forward with a clear run at goal.

There’s no guarantees a deal will go through, but with that kind of talent, we’re sure he would be a huge hit at Elland Road.
