MOT View: Sky pundit comments suggest why £20k-a-wk Leeds star would stay despite PL links
Whether or not Leeds United win promotion this season, you can bet that there’ll be a lot of speculation surrounding Kalvin Phillips’ future at Elland Road.
The 24-year-old has been one of the best players in the Championship this term and the talks of him potentially earning a call-up to Gareth Southgate’s England squad is totally warranted.
There has also been talk about Phillips being linked with some of the Premier League’s top clubs.
Leeds reportedly turned down multiple bids of over £20million for the midfielder last summer before he eventually penned a new five-year deal worth £20,000-a-week in September [Daily Mail].
But it seems that has done little to dissuade teams from trying to sign him as Football Insider reported in January that Manchester United had set their sights on signing Phillips in the summer transfer window.
Losing Phillips would be a massive blow for the Whites due to how key he is to the way they play under Marcelo Bielsa.
However, luckily, Sky Sports pundit Michal Brown, who used to play for Leeds, has suggested why the 24-year-old might want to stay put at Elland Road.
“Kalvin Phillips loves Leeds United,” Brown told the Express when he was asked whether the midfielder is good enough to play for Man United.
“He grew up loving Leeds United. I know his main aim at the moment is to get Leeds United in that Premier League.
“You can just see what it means to the club and the team, and it’s great to have him back in the team.”
Should the fact that Phillips supports Leeds and is from the city be enough to stop him from wanting to move to Man United?
If the Whites can win promotion to the Premier League then that is going to be a massive boost to the chances of keeping hold of the midfielder.
However if they do not win promotion, his future is bound to be up in the air and most teams in the top-flight would surely be vying for his signature.
Let’s hope we seal promotion first and foremost.
If that happens then it should allay some concerns but the summer is still far away and Phillips is going to be so crucial in the coming weeks and months.
