MOT View: Prutton warning proves Leeds need to learn from past mistakes

Seven wins in a row for Leeds United, where have we seen that before?

That’s right, last season. It was all looking great in December in the previous campaign, top at Christmas, and presumably, we all started to believe we were unstoppable.

That wasn’t a good thing, as a disastrous Easter period saw our top two status drift away. One positive about that is that it has given Leeds the mental strength to go again this season.

Marcelo Bielsa’s men are now winning games they might not have won last season. That has seen them create an 11-point gap to third, but we can’t stop there.

David Prutton has fired an early warning to his former side, claiming that a few dodgy results can come from anywhere, and Leeds have been through that before.

“To a degree, we have been here twice before recently,” he wrote in his Yorkshire Evening Post column.

“Firstly under Garry Monk when Leeds slipped up late in the season to miss the playoffs and then last season’s slip from second to third under Marcelo Bielsa. Both times the advantage evaporated very quickly when a few dodgy results came in.

“You can enjoy it and embrace it but it’s ultimately meaningless if the end of the season comes around and they are not still there.”

Prutton is spot on to bring back those bad memories. After all, Leeds must use how they felt after that play-off defeat to Derby last season as motivation this time around.

We have all seen the difference this season, with the last-gasp winners and incredible defensive efforts unknown at Elland Road. Bielsa has proved that he can adapt to the Championship – something that will be key between now and the end of the season.

We all know there are many twists and turns yet to come next year. But if there is anyone ready to cope with them now, it is Bielsa, and we have great faith that he will have learned from last season.

In other Leeds United news, ‘Staggering’ – Phil Hay can hardly believe what Bielsa has said about one Leeds player
