For the second time in the space of a week, Leeds United under-23s saw another one of their matches postponed – this time against Nottingham Forest.

The Whites saw their trip to Burnley called off down to the weather last Monday, as they missed the chance to cement their spot towards the top of the Professional Development League.

Carlos Corberan has used first-team players such as Ian Poveda and Gaetano Berardi in recent games, with both trying to prove their fitness and worth to Marcelo Bielsa.

The case of Poveda is a real head-scratcher. Arriving from Manchester City in January, many Leeds fans had high immediate hopes for the 20-year-old.

He was named on the bench in the games against Millwall and Wigan at Elland Road but hasn’t been in a Championship matchday squad since – settling for starts under Corberan instead.

We have witnessed all those games in the under-23s, and although Poveda has improved, we haven’t seen enough for him to justify a spot in the senior side ahead of the likes of Tyler Roberts.

Poveda now has a fighting chance of being included in the matchday squad against Middlesbrough on Wednesday evening at the Riverside Stadium.

Bielsa has included Jordan Stevens in the squad instead of Poveda, and he hasn’t featured off the bench since the 1-0 defeat against Queens Park Rangers.

“Stevens will give us good answers in attack,” is what Bielsa told Leeds Live after that clash – something that potentially highlights that he is above Poveda in the squad ranking.

What Monday’s postponement does though, is give Poveda a fighting chance to prove himself in first-team training both today and on Tuesday before Wednesday’s game.

After yet another win against Reading on Saturday, it is highly likely that Bielsa could utilise the same squad, but Poveda will be hoping to change that.
