If Leeds United are to secure their long-awaited return to the Premier League this summer, they are going to need to show some real grit over this home straight.
Having been on a fine run of form that saw them win their last five matches, the Whites had their momentum slammed to an unexpected halt by the Coronavirus pandemic.
Now, with the EFL confident that they will be able to restart proceedings in the Championship, Marcelo Bielsa’s men should still get the opportunity to play for their promotion, but face the unenviable task of having to dive right back into the most crucial period of the club’s recent history entirely cold and probably a little bit rusty.
Recognising this, the International Football Association Board has permitted clubs across the globe to use five substitutions matches, instead of the usual three, in an effort to ease things up a little for players who have not been adequate time to reach full match fitness.
And that could mean that some Leeds players are given opportunities that they might otherwise have not been afforded.
One man who could potentially fall into that category is Tyler Roberts.
The Wales international has made 14 Championship appearances this term, but has started just four of those matches.
But we have seen the impact he can have coming on from the bench, especially in his stunning 23 minute cameo against Hull City in February, when he scored twice in a 4-0 rout.
Roberts’ versatility could be a positive factor for the Whites too.
According to Wyscout, the forward has played as a centre-forward, on both wings, and even as a central attacking midfielder this season.
When legs are tiring in the closing stages of matches and Bielsa needs to be able to call on somebody who can do a job in a variety of positions, chances are Roberts will end up being that man.
With the prospect of Premier League football on the horizon, he will know that the potential prize on offer for playing well over these next few weeks could be a greatly improved role in the best competition in the world.
Here’s hoping the youngster can pull it off.
