MOT View: Moment of madness from Leeds 24y/o could be costly

Kalvin Phillips has been so good for Leeds United for so long it doesn’t feel good to criticise him.

However, we’d been tracking his yellows after he picked his fourth up against Blackburn and he only needed to make it through the Middlesbrough game to get the slate wiped.

He didn’t make it.

The foul was a needless one, just outside the Middlesbrough penalty area. Leeds were 1-0 up at the time.

24-year-old Phillips is a committed player and you don’t get what he offers by asking him to dial it down. But, looking at the footage from Saturday, this was about as mindless as it gets.

He was maybe lucky to get away with the first challenge of the move when he went in pretty high. He got enough of the ball, though.

The ball is intercepted on the edge of the Boro penalty box and Leeds want a handball but the ref isn’t interested. Phillips starts running but he’s never going to get to that ball.

Nope. He’s still not getting that ball.

The ball’s long gone when Phillips finally arrives, upending the Boro defender.

The Boro players surround the ref and try to get Phillips sent off. To be fair, it was the only way they had a chance of getting anything out of the game. And even then, probably not.

The referee did the right thing and gave Phillips a yellow despite the protests of Pablo Hernandez and Patrick Bamford.

However, that’s a tackle that Phillips didn’t need to make and one that was never going to result in anything but a yellow card.

With Phillips on the pitch and Leeds on a roll, we’d have fully expected another three points against Huddersfield on Saturday.

With Phillips out, we’d probably take a draw now.

We’re not heavily criticising Phillips for a rash tackle in a season full of pomp and majesty. But we’d love to know what was going through his mind. Has he got somewhere else to be next Saturday?
