Paul Merson has raised concern with the Premier League’s plans for relegation as something which could effect Leeds United and their promotion bid.
The Sky Sports pundit claimed that no one can be relegated just yet as Aston Villa still have a game-in-hand at the bottom.
Merson believes that if everyone had played the same amount of games then it would have been easier to resolve.
Merson commented on the situation on Saturday, and his concerns could have repercussions for Leeds.
“With relegation at the moment, it’s absolutely impossible because Aston Villa have got a game in hand,” he said on Gillette Soccer Saturday (09/05).
“If everybody had played the same amount of games, 29 games whatever, the bad teams are at the bottom, you’ve had a lot of games and it could have been sorted out.
“You cannot relegate Aston Villa with a game in hand because if they win that game in hand they move up a couple of places.”
The EFL and the Premier League have been working to make sure that promotion and relegation will still happen this season, Ricky Parry has confirmed but Merson certainly has a point.
It was reported by the Times that the Championship has a growing number of clubs wanting this season to be ended and a point-per-game model to decide the final standings – a method which would see Leeds promoted.
Before that happens though, this grey area which Merson has brought to light may certainly need to resolve for Leeds to earn their promotion.
