Dom Matteo has urged Leeds United to tie down star players such as Raphinha and Kalvin Phillips to new contracts this season.

The Whites duo have both recently signed contracts at Elland Road, with the Brazilian only just arriving in October from Rennes.

Matteo believes that once revenues start picking up in the Premier League, the top clubs will start preparing “stupid money” to try and steal some of the talents at Elland Road.

Writing in his Yorkshire Evening Post column this week, Matteo suggested that it would be smart to tie down the likes of Phillips and Raphinha to new contracts.

“Kalvin has an ex-Leeds player, Kevin Sharp, as his agent and sometimes that helps because they see the bigger picture, but they’re also looking at the top Premier League clubs and the money players can earn there,” he said.

“Once fans are back in and finances start flowing again, the vultures will be circling around players like Kalvin and Raphinha and offering stupid money.

“We know these players can do it at this level and we have to try and keep them together. We’ve got to tie them down.”

Despite both having long-term deals, teams at the top of the Premier League will be able to offer so much more money to try and steal the likes of Phillips and Raphinha.

Marcelo Bielsa is building his side around these two stars and the likes of Illan Meslier, and they have to be rewarded for the progression they are making very quickly.

Silly money may be available to clubs, but revenue coming in at Elland Road also means that the Whites won’t need to accept any offers for the good of the club.

Teams such as Manchester City lost nearly double the amount of money we did, and that has to be put into perspective when moving forward.

Could we see new contracts for our main players this summer? We certainly think it would be a very smart move; Europe here we come.
