Leeds United included a number of youngsters in their squad for the friendly against Stoke City on Tuesday.
The Whites fell to a disappointing 3-0 defeat at the Bet365 Stadium but would have been happy to get their first run-out before the Premier League kicks off.
Oliver Casey, Pascal Struijk and Leif Davis were all involved from the start, with Robbie Gotts also coming off the bench in the defeat.
One name that was once again missing was Alfie McCalmont.
Marcelo Bielsa has admitted how much of a fan he is of the Northern Irish youngster, but couldn’t find a spot for him either against Stoke or in the Championship last season.
The 20-year-old has been earmarked as the next Kalvin Phillips at Thorp Arch, with Bielsa himself admitting he had watched hours of footage on the midfielder during lockdown.
With that much praise on his shoulders, it comes as a surprise to see him not included for such a simple friendly against Stoke where a guaranteed 45 minutes atleast were on the table.
This surely means a loan exit is in the works.
Where could McCalmont go?
After signing his new four-year contract at Elland Road recently, a surprising temporary switch to Spain was mooted.
The Yorkshire Evening Post reported that there was a loan offer on the table from Unión Deportiva Ibiza and that it was being considered.
Should McCalmont of had any chance of earning a role in-and-around the Leeds squad next season, surely he would have featured against Stoke.
It’s a massive hint he won’t be at Elland Road next season, and he must use this as a chance to catch the eye of Bielsa and his staff with weekly football.
