MOT View: Leeds Covid policy backfiring as rumours swirl over two first-team players

Leeds United have decided on a policy of silence when it comes to positive Covid tests.

Marcelo Bielsa gave a slightly awkward answer when he was asked about it in his last press conference.

Speculation then was about Tyler Roberts, who has been “unavailable” for the last two games.

Bielsa had to speak to a member of the Leeds media staff when he was first asked about Roberts.

And ahead of the Crawley game, he tried to stop future questions on the subject when he said, “I’m not allowed to tell you… I’d ask you to not ask questions please that might allow you to read between the lines. It’s not that I don’t want to answer. If I give an evasive answer it’s in response to what I’ve been asked to do.”

The only positive Leeds test we know of so far has been from Rodrigo and he took the decision to reveal that himself.

Other clubs have decided on a more open approach, making the information on positive tests publicly available in a similar way to other illnesses or injuries.

We’d prefer the same from Leeds. We can understand why they have decided to keep positive tests quiet. However, it hasn’t stopped rumours spreading on Twitter.

Tyler Roberts was the first and it does seem like there could be some credence in that.

The latest is Illan Meslier, who didn’t play in the Crawley game on Sunday, while youngster Elia Caprile was on the bench.

That wasn’t unexpected but there are rumours on Twitter that Meslier has recorded a positive test and will now miss the Brighton game.

Rumours about Meslier are now swirling around the Leeds Reddit and on Twitter. If true, it would be a major blow, with Kiko Casilla playing terribly in the FA Cup game.

We have to stress that it’s all speculation at the moment but this is what happens when a club stays quiet on a subject like this.

We’ll know more after the Bielsa press conference on Thursday but we think an open policy on this matter would put a stop to any unnecessary rumours before they started.
