MOT View: Leeds could be about to pin promotion hopes on a huge unknown

Leeds United fans have been calling for 19-year-old Illan Meslier to get his Championship debut and it could come very soon.

Kiko Casilla will find out tomorrow whether he’s been found guilty of racist abuse after his FA hearing is finally taking place.

It seems ludicrous that the case is only being heard now after the incident happened in September.

It did give Leeds time to find an experienced replacement for Casilla but after Meslier played a blinder in the FA Cup tie against Arsenal in January, their plans changed.

Instead, in a huge show of faith for Meslier, the club decided to bring in 18-year-old Elia Caprile as back-up.

Meslier will replace Casilla in goal for the first team if he’s banned.

It’s obviously a big gamble. Irrespective of whether he can handle the pressure of the Championship – and that’s a big if – if anything happens to Meslier, Leeds will be in big trouble.

Caprile has no senior experience but may well have to step up if Casilla is banned and Meslier is suspended or injured.

It’s a very risky business not having anyone experienced on the bench. Hopefully it won’t come back to bite Leeds.

Hopefully, Casilla won’t get banned but we think it’s more likely than not given Jonathan Leko has a witness in Macauley Bonne.

If he is, Leeds are pinning their promotion hopes on a huge unknown.

Meslier played well in his one game for Leeds but it’s another thing entirely to play week-in, week-out in the cauldron of a Championship promotion run-in.
