MOT View: Leeds must move quickly after Fofana bid rejected for Burnley

Leeds United must move quickly to secure the signing of Seko Fofana after Lens rejected a bid worth £14m from Premier League rivals Burnley, according to Ryan Taylor.

The Whites were linked with the Ivory Coast international this week [Foot Mercato] as the transfer window enters it’s second half, with Marcelo Bielsa yet to add to his first-team squad.

It’s now emerged that the club will face stiff competition for their midfield target, after Express & Star journalist Ryan Taylor reported that Burnley have had a bid in the region of £14m rejected by the Ligue 1 side.

If Leeds are interested in getting a deal done, this news should spark them into life immediately.

The fact that Burnley are known to have money to spend now after losing Chris Wood to relegation rivals Newcastle in a £25m deal will likely drive the price of the player up, but also makes their need to sign Fofana greater.

That is a problem for Leeds, who are patient in their approach for transfers but are desperate to add some quality to their ranks as well as add bodies to a relatively weak squad.

Fofana has been described as ‘complete’ in the past by his manager Franck Haise [Newcastle World] and the stats back up that he would be a huge boost to Bielsa’s midfield options.

As captain of Lens for the majority of his 22 appearances this season, Fofana would bring leadership to a side that is relatively bereft of big characters on the pitch.

In addition to that though the Ivorian averages 2.7 shots per game, 2.2 dribbles per game (just behind Lionel Messi) and has a 90.3% pass completion rate for the season according to WhoScored.

That would see him bring an ability to drive from box-to-box, create attacks, link up with teammates but also slot straight into the high energy style of Bielsa.

With seven goals from midfield too, he provides an added goal threat which is something Elland Road is crying out for.

If Leeds are serious about getting a deal done for Fofana, they must move quickly or face losing out on their ideal target to a relegation rival.
