Leeds United have been handed a boost to their hopes of signing Arsenal goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez with him demanding more first-team football.
Martinez, 27, has been on the books at the Emirates for eight years but has only made 37 first-team appearances for the London club in that time.
The Argentinean goalkeeper made nine Premier League appearances for Arsenal last season after Bernd Leno was hit with an injury.
In those appearances, he managed to impress a lot by keeping three clean sheets before playing a key role as Mikel Arteta’s side won the FA Cup final at Wembley earlier this month.
Martinez is now eager to get the number one shirt at Arsenal and has warned his club that he will look to quit if he drops back down the pecking order next season.
“I have shown the club that I can play for them and when I return next season I need to have more games. That is the only way I will stay at Arsenal,” Martinez told Argentinean radio station Continental, as quoted by the Daily Mail.
“My target is to consolidate my place with Arsenal and to reach the Argentinian national team as number one.
“I won’t stop until I get that and if I don’t play for Arsenal, then clearly I would move on.”
Leeds will be love what Martinez has said.
According to The Athletic journalist Phil Hay, the former Reading and Wolves loanee is someone who the Yorkshire club is a fan of.
Kiko Casilla’s future is yet to be clarified with the Spaniard suffering from poor form last season as well as an eight-match ban for racially abusing Jonathan Leko.
Illan Meslier’s a good goalkeeper but he is young and inexperienced.
Although Martinez isn’t the most experienced of goalkeepers, he’s proven in the last couple of months that he can perform well in the Premier League.
Stats by WyScout show that he had an xCG of 1.19 per 90 minutes of Premier League football last season while averaging 3.5 saves – 48.5 per cent with reflexes – and having a short-pass accuracy of 95.8 per cent.
It is important that Bielsa has a goalkeeper who’s comfortable with the ball at his feet and Martinez’s long-ball accuracy of 53.7 per cent is also impressive.
We would definitely take him if Casilla leaves in the summer.
He’s itching to play, he’s proven he can play and would be an upgrade on the dodgy number one Bielsa current has at his disposal.
