Leeds United could land an absolute gem in Yangel Herrera if they can persuade Manchester City to part ways with their loan star this summer.

Herrera is currently in the final stretches of a two-year loan with La Liga outfit Granada who he has impressed for in Spain and Europe.

Leeds United

The 23-year-old was on English shores on Thursday night when he lined up at Old Trafford for Granada’s second leg of their Europa League quarter-final clash with Manchester United.

The Spanish outfit had a tough time of it against a much superior side as they lost 2-0 but he was still their second-best performer according to WhoScored statistics, while he shone in the reverse fixture with TEAMtalk editor and Whites fan James Marshment tweeting he was Granada’s “best player on the night” and that he “fits the Bielsa mould”.

Herrera has also gained praise from La Liga pundit Terry Gibson who told talkSPORT [08/04/21] that he had been “outstanding’ in Spain.

The Manchester City loanee spent time with Whites winger Jack Harrison during their time at MLS club New York City.

They both played with World Cup winner David Villa who said his teammate would go on to become a “world class player”. [Marca]

That’s high praise indeed from one of the best strikers to grace Europe in recent times and Herrera really seems to fit the Marcelo Bielsa bill.

Leeds United

Marshment labelled him as a “lively and energetic” player and that’s exactly what’s required in this Leeds midfield with the demands El Loco sets of his players.

One of the best things about Herrera is his versatility. He was positioned in an attacking midfield role in Manchester on Thursday, where he has started seven times this season, but that’s actually his most infrequent role in midfield with 13 from a more moderate central position and nine as a defensive midfielder. A perfect replacement for Kalvin Phillips if he’s ever injured or suspended? Quite possibly, but his array of talents mean he can also play in front of Phillips and that’s an exciting proposition.

It’s a position we need to strengthen with Tyler Roberts and Mateusz Klich yet to fully convince as box-to-box options in the Premier League, and Herrera would surely ease the concerns.

Leeds United

His Manchester City contract doesn’t expire until 2024 [Transfermarkt] but he’ll surely find it tough to force his way into their star-studded XI or even squad.

We have a prior relationship with Manchester City with Harrison in his third loan spell while Bielsa and Pep Guardiola are close allies, so could that help to nudge a deal over the line?

Harrison should be joining the Whites permanently this summer so perhaps City will sanction another loan move to Elland Road, this time for Herrera, if they still want to get a closer look at him.

Either way he’s someone to get really excited about and we’d love to see him in a Leeds shirt and think he will get supporters on their feet with some all-action displays.
