MOT View: International heroics prove Leeds ace must start v Birmingham

Leeds loanee Eddie Nketiah sent out a big signal to manager Marcelo Bielsa on Tuesday night.

He hasn’t started in the Championship since his move from Arsenal in the summer, but while Leeds have struggled to score this season, Nketiah showed them how it was done for the England Under-21s.

He scored a hat-trick as the Young Lions thumped Austria 5-1 and he could have had even more but for a missed penalty in the closing minutes.

Fabian Ehmann made the save but Nketiah went home with the ball and will now be hoping he’s done enough to catch Bielsa’s eye.

Two of his goals were from close range – the sort of poacher’s goals he’s known for. One was a really sharp finish with his head.

Leeds have scored 15 goals this season in 11 games – the lowest amount of any team in the Championship top nine. Their xG (expected goals) is just over 23.

Nkeiah has only scored two goals in the Championship but is still averaging 0.92 goals per 90 minutes because of his limited game-time. [WyScout]

Leeds lost 1-0 to Charlton with an xG of 1.96 compared to 0.38 for their opponents.

They drew to Derby with an xG of 2.44 compared to 0.27 for their opponents.

With Bristol City sniffing around in the hope they can convince Arsenal to recall Nketiah and send him out on another loan, it’s time for the youngster to start for Leeds in the next Championship game against Birmingham on Saturday. Before it’s too late.
