MOT View: Bielsa discussion is exactly what Leeds squad need as Alioski makes fixture admission

Leeds United fans do not need to be reminded about the way the club’s promotion bid fell to pieces last season.

After a hectic festive schedule saw Leeds win seven matches in a row in just over a month, it all started going wrong for Marcelo Bielsa’s men as their form dropped and their slide out of the automatic promotion spots started.

Fast-forward a year and we are here today; second in the table, eight points clear of third and the squad is preparing for a clash against Hull City to extend their winning run to seven matches.

Leeds’ longest winning streak of last season was ended by Hull at Elland Road on December 29 and there are no doubts in the squad that this is going to be a tough fixture on Tuesday night.

Yes, Hull are 12th and their form isn’t the most consistent, but a team that boasts the prolific Jarrod Bowen is a team that has to be respected.

And that is why Ezgjan Alioski has admitted that over the next few weeks, Leeds have some difficult games to deal with and has suggested that Bielsa is going to have a word with the squad ahead of their clash with Hull.

“I think Marcelo is going to speak with us about these games because now everyone will expect us to win these two home games. Of course we want to do that but it’s hard,” Alioski told the Yorkshire Evening Post.

“It’s been hard to win six games in a row but that’s what the coach has been working on with us.

“We’re going to try to do everything we can to beat Hull City and Cardiff but we need to concentrate first on Hull City because we know what happened last year.

“We want to keep winning at home especially. We’re going to work hard and we don’t have a lot of time.”

Alioski’s comments are a reminder that Leeds’ squad is completely grounded and well aware of what happened last year.

That defeat to Hull can be pinpointed as the game where the Whites’ promotion started to fall apart as Leeds went on a seven-match run that saw them pick up seven points out of the available 21 after that.

Let’s hope that Bielsa’s upcoming discussion with the team can ensure that does not happen again.

In other Leeds United news, the Whites are in the hunt to sign an in-demand forward from West Brom.
